Canopée earns silver seal of The Brazil GHG Protocol Program

Demonstrating the commitment and transparency with the Sustainability and the respect with the Environment, Canopée, based on its inventory, can give sequence to its plan of sustainable goals.

Canopée, in 2021, conducted its first greenhouse gas inventory, according to the methodology of the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program. Due to presenting a complete inventory, it was classified as a silver inventory by the program. The inventory also identified that the climatech’s operation has low environmental impact related to GHG emissions.

The Canopée’s main CO2 emitting sources were analyzed in the period between January 1st and December 31st, 2021, considering scopes 1, 2 and 3: direct emissions, indirect emissions from electricity consumption and other indirect emissions, respectively. Considering the emissions from all sectors of the company, the main sources were: the acquisition of electricity, the generation of waste in operations and business travel.

To offset the company’s emissions in 2021,  Canopée joined the Carbon Zero Program of the Federal University of Viçosa performing a planting 13 times greater than necessary to neutralize its CO2 emissions. Were planted 1023 seedlings of native species in an area of 7,000 m² given by UFV for this purpose, creating an arboretum that associates the neutralization of emissions to other environmental and scientific benefits.

The survey was carried out in accordance with the GHG Protocol methodology (greenhouse gas protocol), the most widely adopted in the world for this purpose. This methodology for calculating GHG emissions was developed by FGVces and WRI, in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment, the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS), and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBSCD). It follows the norms of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and is aligned with the quantification models (for GHG emissions and removals) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Canopée, as well as the Brazilian Program GHG Protocol, seeks to stimulate the corporate culture of Greenhouse Gases Inventory in Brazil for an agenda of tackling climate change. According to Jean-Pierre Cantaux – CEO of Canopée “companies need to keep an eye on this process. Prepare the inventory to analyze the steps in its production chain in order to reduce its impact, is highly positive and generates benefits that go beyond the environment, use the environmental compensation programs and carbon credit brings a significant improvement to the brand, increased competitiveness of the company and propagates the idea of value among employees.
