Feb 20 Canopée and Agenda 2030: Towards Sustainable Development

Brazil faces increasing challenges in its quest to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations (UN) to be achieved by 2030. According to the Luz Report, a survey conducted by more than 60 civil society organizations on progress in implementing these goals, more than 80% of the agreed commitments are in decline, threatened or stagnant. The epicenter of this concern is the 2030 Agenda, a pact established in 2015 by 193 member states, with the purpose of defining 17 sustainable development goals. These goals aim to promote sustainability in three interconnected pillars: social, environmental and economic.

The urgency of the 2030 Agenda, established as an imperative call by all UN member countries in 2015, requires organizations from all sectors – companies, governments and civil society – to join this endeavor to shape a truly sustainable future.

In this context, Canopée Gestão Ambiental e Florestal has shown itself to be an example of commitment to the SDGs, contributing to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda through solid actions.

Canopée is a Climatetech that is based on the appreciation of Brazil's natural heritage in favor of global sustainability and future generations. Its mission is to ensure a more promising future, both in environmental and social terms, reflecting its commitment to the 2030 Agenda. The vision of becoming one of the most active and recognized companies in the area of environmental management and green activities in Brazil is not only an ambition, but also a demonstration of its willingness to lead and inspire positive change, as highlighted by Canopée CEO Jean-Pierre Cantaux.

According to Cantaux, Canopée's approach aligns with several SDGs of the 2030 Agenda, with emphasis on SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land).

In the REDD+ Yuxibu Project, developed by Canopée, for example, 6 SDGs are achieved:

In all its projects, including Yuxibu, Canopée uses advanced technologies to monitor geographic information, map forest areas, monitor carbon stocks and prevent deforestation. These actions aim to perpetuate the biodiversity and genetic heritage existing in the project region, while helping to prevent the emission of millions of tons of carbon into the atmosphere. “By doing so, Canopée directly targets two SDGs (13 and 15) by promoting the conservation of life on land, the protection of natural ecosystems and the mitigation of the effects of climate change,” adds Cantaux.

The social dimension of Canopée’s work is equally important. Through strategic partnerships with associations, cooperatives and other local stakeholders, the company designs and implements social initiatives that contribute to achieving multiple SDGs of the 2030 Agenda. These projects not only strengthen communities economically, but also promote education, health, well-being and gender equality, thus reflecting a commitment to sustainable development.

Canopée operates in two main directions, covering a wide range of efforts in favor of sustainable development. Through consulting services, the company maps and quantifies greenhouse gas emissions and assesses the environmental impacts of other organizations, providing valuable insights for reducing their carbon footprints.

Climatech also directs its expertise to environmental project management, where it manages initiatives that neutralize carbon emissions and generate credits through services that benefit the environment and local communities. All activities are supported by three fundamental pillars – Environmental, Social and Technological – which are intrinsically linked to the SDGs.

Canopée seeks to align its core business, the focus of its business activities’ impact, with the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN’s 2030 Agenda. By promoting actions that meet several SDGs, Canopée not only increases its positive impact, but also inspires other companies to follow the same path towards sustainable development.
