Jan 25 Canopée Receives Silver Seal from the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program for the Second Consecutive Year

Since its establishment in 2008, the program has stood out as a crucial ally in the search for responsible and low-carbon development in the country

In the 2023 cycle, Canopée Ambiental e Florestal reaffirms its commitment to sustainability, transparency and respect for the environment by once again receiving the Silver seal from the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program/FGV for its Greenhouse Gas Inventory.

This seal certifies complete Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventories, and is a way of validating the contribution and commitment of companies to providing public data on their emissions to society through the Public Emissions Registry. This process makes procedures more transparent and encourages other companies to follow the same path.

For Jean Pierre Cantaux, CEO of Canopée, the PBGHG Silver Seal represents the company's commitment to environmentally-friendly practices and transparency with society. “We reinforce the importance of embracing sustainability and facing the challenges of climate change in a proactive and transparent manner,” emphasizes Cantaux.

Brazilian GHG Protocol Program

The Brazilian GHG Protocol Program (PBGHG) was conceived in 2008 by the Center for Sustainability Studies of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGVces) and the World Resource Institute (WRI), in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment, the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS), the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBSCD) and 27 founding companies.

According to the organization, the program plays a crucial role in adapting the GHG Protocol method to the Brazilian context, in addition to developing calculation tools for estimating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Greenhouse Gas Inventories: A Guide to Corporate Sustainability

Greenhouse Gas Inventories are crucial tools for understanding and managing GHG emissions in a company's operations. They serve as a reference, offering a solid basis for companies to mitigate their emissions year after year. This approach allows organizations to not only understand, but also progressively reduce their environmental impacts, promoting more sustainable business practices and actively contributing to minimizing adverse effects on the environment.

In addition to preparing and publishing its own inventory, Canopée offers its services to help other companies follow the same path.

What is a Greenhouse Gas Inventory?

A GHG inventory is a systematic assessment of greenhouse gas emissions across all of a company’s activities. It covers everything from direct emissions in the production process (Scope 1) to indirect emissions associated with electricity consumption (Scope 2) and, optionally, indirect emissions related to other sources (Scope 3).

Can Any Company Do It?

Yes, any company can and should conduct a GHG inventory to understand its environmental impact and take steps to reduce it. It is a powerful tool for sustainable management, regardless of the sector or size of the company.

Jean-Pierre Cantaux, CEO of Canopée Ambiental, emphasizes the strategic importance of the process: “Preparing the inventory to analyze the stages in our production chain with the aim of reducing our impact is highly positive; In addition to benefits for the planet, it brings significant improvements to the brand, increases the company's competitiveness and spreads the idea of value among employees.”
