Positive news shows the increased awareness about the importance and preservation of the Amazon. In January of this year, 2023, the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) reported a 61% reduction in deforestation compared to January 2022, in the so-called “Legal Amazon”. The alerts released by INPE were made by the Real-Time Deforestation Detection System (DETER).

The “Legal Amazon” is made up of the states of Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima, Tocantins and part of Maranhão. And speaking of Acre, Canopée has one of its projects located in this region, “Yuxibu”, which is located on the São Jorge I, São Jorge II and Mucuripe Farms, in the city of Sena Madureira.

The area is predominantly home to traditional peoples and communities, such as the Huni Kuin indigenous people, and has always had high deforestation rates, which end up compromising not only the native biome but also the local population.

As a principle in all Canopée projects, part of the revenue obtained from the sale of carbon credits is reinvested in socio-environmental initiatives in the areas of influence. With the Yuxibu Project, one of the first developed by Canopée, it is no different; a portion of the proceeds from the credits from forest preservation return to the state of Acre, generating jobs for the local community, preserving biodiversity and combating climate change.

For the Huni Kuin, the name Yuxibu is a sacred entity that is difficult to explain. According to the story of the shaman Agostinho Ĩka Muru, he is the great creator of all things. In a possible translation, Yuxibu would be something like the spirits that own or create.

“It is a Yuxibu that gives us life, gives us everything we want to do here on Earth, fulfilling our missions, passing through the stretches with all the Yuxibuses here that we borrow, nothing we have is ours. (…)” (Ika Muru, 2014)

One of the main objectives of the “Yuxibu Project” is to protect the Amazon rainforest and its enormous biodiversity from deforestation. Special care for this region is provided by Canopée and certified by “Bureau Veritas”, a pioneer in sustainability and ESG solutions, as well as a world leader in Testing, Inspection and Certification, developing its own methodology adapted to the country for accounting and generating carbon credits from sustainable forest management projects.

In addition, all actions carried out in Yuxibu, which has protected the forest since 2005, have a special concern for helping the development of local communities. Among the goals in this region is the reduction of carbon emissions by 3,311,169 tons of CO2eq (carbon dioxide equivalent) in a period of 30 years. The term “CO2eq” refers to any other GHG (greenhouse gas) emitted.

To ensure that everyone involved in the Yuxibu Project is committed and working seriously, constant monitoring is carried out. Audits are carried out annually in the certified area to monitor environmental and socioeconomic indicators, deforestation and the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Reliable certifications and technical monitoring are essential to ensure the environmental and social integrity of these projects, as well as the accuracy of measurements of greenhouse gas emission reductions.

Certification must be carried out by reliable and internationally recognized entities, which verify whether the projects comply with strict quality and sustainability standards. This ensures that the carbon credits acquired are real, effective and capable of helping companies that wish to contribute to the preservation of the planet.
