Nov 28 Canopée receives GHG Protocol seal

Demonstrating its commitment and transparency to Sustainability and respect for the Environment, Canopée Ambiental e Florestal, based on its inventory, will be able to continue its plan of sustainable goals.

Canopée carried out its first complete Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory and received the Silver seal from the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program/FGV. The survey identified that Climatech's operation has a low environmental impact regarding GHG emissions.

According to the publication, the period analyzed from January 1 to December 31, 2021, guaranteed the best rates for quantifying each one's emissions. The main emission sources were analyzed, covering scopes 1, 2 and 3: direct emissions, indirect emissions from electricity consumption and other indirect emissions, respectively. Considering emissions from all sectors of the company, with the main sources being the acquisition of electricity, the generation of waste in operations and business travel.

To offset the company's emissions for the year 2021, Canopée joined the Zero Carbon Program of the Federal University of Viçosa by planting 13 times more than necessary to neutralize emissions. 1023 seedlings of native species were planted in an area of 7,000 m² provided by UFV for this purpose, creating an arboretum that combines the neutralization of emissions with other environmental and scientific benefits.

The survey was conducted in accordance with the GHG Protocol methodology (greenhouse gas protocol, in free translation of the acronym in English), the most widely adopted in the world for this purpose. This methodology for calculating GHG emissions was developed by FGVces and WRI, in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment, Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS), World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBSCD). It follows the standards of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and is aligned with the quantification models (for GHG emissions and removals) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Canopée Gestão Ambiental e Florestal, as well as the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program, seeks to stimulate the corporate culture of inventorying greenhouse gas emissions in Brazil for an agenda to address climate change in organizations. According to Jean-Pierre Cantaux – CEO of Canopée Ambiental “companies need to keep an eye on this process. Preparing an inventory to analyze the stages in your production chain with the aim of reducing your impact is highly positive and generates benefits that go beyond the environment; using environmental compensation and carbon credit programs brings a significant improvement to the brand, increases the company's competitiveness and spreads the idea of value among employees.” He concludes
