Itxawá Project: The First REDD+ Certified by Cercarbono on Private Lands in Brazil

A historic milestone for Canopée and Brazilian conservation: the first REDD+ project on private lands in Brazil certified under the Cercarbono standard.

Itxawá Project: The First REDD+ Certified by Cercarbono on Private Lands in Brazil

We are proud to celebrate a historic milestone for Canopée and the carbon sector in Brazil. Following two years of intensive technical fieldwork and audit verifications, we achieved the certification of our landmark initiative under the Cercarbono standard—the premier carbon standard developed in South America. The Itxawá Project is officially the first private land REDD+ project in Brazil to achieve this prestigious certification.

This certification validates the ecological and methodological integrity of the project, ensuring it generates real, measurable, and permanent benefits for the climate, Amazonian biodiversity, and neighboring traditional communities.

Founded in 2016, Cercarbono has become a benchmark across the international voluntary carbon market, certifying and registering climate mitigation projects across more than 12 countries and three continents using rigorous, clear, and contextualized tropical forestry methodologies.

Why High Integrity Matters in Carbon Markets

While global carbon markets are expanding rapidly, not all environmental credits deliver equivalent quality and ecological impact. High-integrity credits, such as those certified under Cercarbono, undergo rigorous third-party audits and follow transparent quantification frameworks guaranteeing verified, permanent climate mitigation and positive co-benefits for local ecosystems.

Conversely, low-integrity credits often lack traceability, are based on unreliable estimates, or do not represent real carbon reductions or removals. Such units erode market credibility and do not contribute effectively to global climate goals.

Choosing accredited international standards like Cercarbono is essential to cultivating market trust and ensuring that corporate climate investments yield genuine environmental results.

A Transformative Milestone

Our partnership with Cercarbono was intentional: its specialized tropical forestry methodologies, robust compliance standards, and recognition by ICROA (International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance) guarantee international credibility and alignment with institutional market buyers.

Furthermore, the project is registered on EcoRegistry, an environmental asset platform powered by distributed ledger technology, ensuring cryptographic traceability, ownership security, and public access at every stage of the credit lifecycle. This technology underpins the complete transparency we embed across all operations.

The certification of the Itxawá Project marks only the beginning of our vision. This milestone accelerates our expansion, including the development of Yuxibu 2, which adheres to the identical principles of environmental additionality, social co-benefits, and scientific rigor.

We are proud to be part of the transformation that is consolidating Brazil as a key player in the carbon market. Projects like Itxawá demonstrate the enormous potential of our country to offer concrete solutions in the fight against climate change.

At Canopée, we believe the future is sustainable, technologically verified, and collaborative. That future begins here. The future is Itxawá.
