EN: We are thrilled to announce a historic milestone for Canopée and the carbon sector in Brazil. After two years of dedication and hard work, we are honored to have certified our first project under the Cercarbono standard, the leading carbon standard developed in South America. The Itxawá Project, now certified, is the first REDD+ project on private land in Brazil to achieve this accomplishment.

This certification validates the project’s integrity, ensuring that it generates real, measurable, and lasting impacts on the environment and local communities.

Founded in 2016, Cercarbono is a reference in the voluntary carbon market, certifying and registering credits from climate change mitigation projects across more than 12 countries and three continents, using rigorous, clear, and well-contextualized methodologies.

Why High-Integrity Credits Matter in the Carbon Market

The carbon market is growing rapidly, but not all credits possess the same level of quality and impact. High-integrity credits, such as those certified by the Cercarbono standard, undergo rigorous audits and follow transparent methodologies that ensure the generation of real and verifiable benefits for the climate, ecosystems, and local communities.

On the other hand, low-integrity credits often lack traceability, rely on unreliable estimates, or fail to represent genuine carbon reductions or removals. These credits can undermine the market’s credibility and fail to contribute effectively to global climate mitigation goals.

Choosing recognized standards like Cercarbono is essential to building trust in the voluntary carbon market and ensuring that climate actions are truly effective.

A Milestone of Transformation

The choice of Cercarbono was strategic: its specialized methodologies for tropical forests, robust compliance practices, and recognition by ICROA (International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance) provide credibility and alignment with the market’s major players.

Furthermore, the project is registered on EcoRegistry, a blockchain-based platform that ensures traceability and security at all stages of the carbon credit cycle. This partnership reinforces the transparency and reliability we strive for in our operations.

The certification of the Itxawá Project is just the beginning. This milestone drives us to move forward with the launch of Project Yuxibu 2, which will follow the same principles of environmental integrity, innovation, and social impact.

We are proud to be part of the transformation that is positioning Brazil as a key player in the carbon market. Projects like Itxawá demonstrate the enormous potential of our country to provide tangible solutions in the fight against climate change.

At Canopée, we believe the future is sustainable, innovative, and collaborative. The future starts here. The future is Itxawá.
